Climate-Connect Initiative Launches Renewed Drive for Climate Action in Nigeria
A leading coalition of environmental organizations in Nigeria has unveiled a renewed push to tackle climate change through education, advocacy, and grassroots engagement. Now operating as the Climate-Connect Initiative, the group—formerly known as Climate Change Network Nigeria (CCN-Nigeria)—brings together over 150 civil society organizations committed to building a sustainable, climate-friendly future.
The coalition announced its “Connecting4Action” agenda, aimed at strengthening partnerships across sectors and empowering communities to take meaningful climate action. According to the organization, its mission centers on mobilizing stakeholders and promoting solutions that balance environmental protection with human development.
Climate-Connect is affiliated with global climate networks such as the Climate Action Network and its regional arm, Climate Action Network West Africa, positioning Nigeria within a broader international movement for climate justice. The group also collaborates with major global bodies including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and youth-focused initiatives like YOUNGO.
Multi-Sector Approach to Climate Solutions
The initiative outlined three core focus areas—education and outreach, policy advocacy, and research and innovation. Through these pillars, Climate-Connect says it is working to raise awareness, influence environmental policy, and support new technologies aimed at reducing emissions and improving resilience.
Among its flagship mitigation projects are tree-planting campaigns and recycling programs designed to reduce environmental waste and create green jobs. Adaptation efforts include initiatives such as climate-smart agriculture, resilient cities, and community-based programs that help vulnerable populations cope with environmental changes.
The organization is also investing in training and advocacy, equipping individuals—particularly young people—with skills in renewable energy, circular economy practices, and nature-based solutions.
Call for Public Participation
Climate-Connect is urging Nigerians to take part in its programs through volunteering, partnerships, and donations. The group emphasized that collective action is key to addressing the growing climate crisis, noting that “people and nature can thrive together” when communities are empowered with the right tools and knowledge.
As part of its awareness campaign, the coalition is also promoting global and local climate conversations, including participation in events like the Global Climate Strike, and publishing educational content on the effects of climate change and the benefits of renewable energy solutions such as solar power.
With climate impacts such as flooding, desertification, and rising temperatures increasingly affecting communities, Climate-Connect Initiative says its expanded efforts are focused on building a resilient Nigeria—one community at a time.
